The University of Lausanne Doctoral Program in Digital Studies (PDEN) is organizing a transcription workshop on September 16th for PhD students.
Transcribing interviews is an essential step in social science research, and can be a time-consuming and expensive process. In the last few years, many platforms promise to provide automatic transcriptions of audio files, for moderate sums and in record time. The use of these platforms for SHS purposes raises a number of questions: data security, ease of use, quality of the transcription obtained, time saving compared to manual transcription.
In this workshop, speakers Sandrine Ollinger (CNRS) and Elise Tancoigne (UNIL) will discuss the issues related to the use of such tools in the framework of their research, and present the results of a comparison of 8 of these platforms. Participants will be asked to transcribe a few minutes of an audio file that will be provided to them, as well as to provide short audio excerpts from their research.
