DARIAH position paper on digitized cultural heritage

Europe’s Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH) has released a position paper on digitized cultural heritage, entitled “Cultural Heritage Data as Humanities Research Data”.

The October, 2020 publication was submitted to the European Commission as part its evaluation of the 2011 Recommendation on Digitization and Online Accessibility of Cultural Material and Digital Preservation (REC 2011/711/EU).

In this position paper, the authors address the European Commission’s “ambitious, but no longer achievable” goal of digitizing all European cultural heritage by 2025. They argue that with over 80% of Europe’s cultural heritage still un-digitized, there is an urgent need to re-think Europe’s digitization strategy, and offer some recommendations for how this could be done.
