Alina Volynskaya wins SNSF Doc.CH fellowship

Alina Volynskaya, currently a scientific assistant in College of Humanities Lab for the History of Science and Technology (LHST), has been selected to receive a competitive Doc.CH fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

Volynskaya’s Doc.CH fellowship will support up to four years of PhD research in the LHST, led by Jérôme Baudry. She received the prestigious award for her project proposal, “Querying the Digital Archive of Science: Distant Reading, Semantic Modeling and Representation of Knowledge.”

In this work, Volynskaya plans to study how scientific archives, and access to them, have been changed by digital technologies. She will investigate how digital repositories can be used meaningfully by historians and the public, and her thesis will outline new interpretations of the infrastructures (linked data technologies) and methods (distant reading) of digital archives of science. To achieve this, Volynskaya plans to combine theory with case studies based on the archives of CERN as well as EPFL.

The SNSF announced the 24 recipients of this year’s Doc.CH grants in January. The goal of the funding scheme is to allow promising researchers to write a doctoral thesis in the humanities and social sciences, with awards of CHF 228,000 per grant on average.
